About This Image
More than 12 billion years of cosmic history are shown in this panoramic view of thousands of galaxies in various stages of assembly. The view covers a portion of the southern field of a galaxy census called the Great Observatories Origins Deep Survey (GOODS). This extraordinary image represents one of the deepest looks into the universe ever achieved, revealing galaxies that formed when the cosmos was less than a billion years old. The diversity of galactic shapes and colors tells the story of cosmic evolution from the earliest structures to the mature galaxies we see today.
Scientific Significance
The GOODS South Field is one of the most scientifically valuable regions of sky ever observed, providing crucial data for understanding galaxy formation and evolution across cosmic time. By combining observations from multiple space telescopes including Hubble, Spitzer, and Chandra, astronomers have created a comprehensive census of galaxy properties from the early universe to the present day. The field has revealed how galaxies grow through mergers, how star formation rates have changed over billions of years, and how supermassive black holes co-evolve with their host galaxies. The diverse population of galaxies at different redshifts allows astronomers to trace the buildup of stellar mass, the evolution of galaxy morphologies, and the cosmic history of star formation. GOODS has become a benchmark dataset for testing theoretical models of cosmology and galaxy evolution.
Observation Details
This deep field image was created by combining observations from Hubble's Advanced Camera for Surveys (ACS) in multiple optical and near-infrared filters. The total exposure time for the field exceeds 100 hours, with images taken over multiple epochs to maximize depth and remove cosmic ray artifacts. The field was carefully selected to avoid bright foreground stars and to be observable by multiple space and ground-based observatories. Complementary data from the Spitzer Space Telescope in infrared and the Chandra X-ray Observatory provide a complete multi-wavelength view of the galaxy population.

Fun Facts
- 1
The GOODS South Field contains approximately 10,000 galaxies in an area of sky smaller than the apparent size of the full Moon.
- 2
Some of the faintest galaxies in this image are so distant that their light has been traveling toward us for over 12 billion years.
- 3
This single image required hundreds of hours of Hubble observation time accumulated over multiple years.
